Chaos in New York: what was bound to happen has happened… or the result of disproportionate prohibition policies! A source of inspiration for the Government of the Brussels-Capital Region?

Reminder of the political decision by the New York authorities that entered into force on 5 September:
Airbnb: in New York, it is no longer possible to rent an apartment for less than 30 days.

And the result one month later:
New York’s Airbnb Ban Is Descending Into Pure Chaos | WIRED

The number of short-term rental listings on Airbnb fell from 22,434 to 3,227 between August and October — a drop of 80%. Mission accomplished for the New York authorities? First of all, it is important to distinguish the political decision from the legal decisions that will undoubtedly follow in the months and years ahead. But more directly: no — a complete failure and total chaos. The market has largely gone underground (sounds familiar…), with listings now appearing on Facebook and other platforms such as Craigslist, Houfy, and many others.

However, the more damaging and inevitable consequences of such short-sighted policies affect the consumer — the “service recipient” (the tourist): hotel prices will rise significantly, while the underground short-term rental supply will provide little guarantee in terms of safety for visitors. This is what happens when supply and demand are completely unbalanced without a holistic approach. These political management errors will need to be corrected over time.
